Succulent flowers are decorative flowers that make your home look like a beautiful greenhouse; and it smells nice too. Continue reading for tips on growing beautiful succulent plants.
What are succulent plants
Simply put, succulent plants are plants with stems that can hold water for a long period. These plants are like camel plants because they know how to store up water for a long period and use it during the drought and dry season.
Succulent on its own refers to juicy and tender; so when a plant is said to be succulent, it means it is a soft and tender plant that stores up water in its stems, or leaves, sometimes even both for prolonged usage.
Most of the succulent plants you find are around arid deserts (Like the cacti) or in river banks, seaside cliffs and other moist areas like steamy jungles and mountains. The succulent plants in the desert have a long root that helps them find water and the stems and leaves helps them store the water when the drought is severe.
Succulent plants can survive for months on their stored water, and you’d think they would lose their freshness, but no, they still retain it until the drought is over. The plants are usually in a bright and light-filled place, but the sun isn’t generally at its fullest or hottest.
Succulent types/ 10 succulent plants for home
Succulent plants come in different forms and nature, some able to hold more water than others. As homeowners who would want to decorate your homes with flowers, it would be good to go not only for the beautiful but also the adaptable. You need to get a plant that can adapt to your schedule; and the succulent plant is just the plant you need.
So I’ll be sharing with you, ten succulent plants that are good for home décor:
Burro’s Tail (Sedum morganianum)
This succulent plant is a gray-green or sometimes gray-blue, plant that can grow up to 3-feet long. One of the advantages of this plant is that you can plant it in a hanging basket; but a vase would still suffice. It performs best in a high concentration of light, which is why its native land is in Mexico. In Mexico, the sun and soil there is perfect for its growth.
When you’re using the plant, it is a good idea to allow the water to dry after each watering, before you go on with watering it again. And also remember to fertilize the plant, once every summer, with a balanced fertilizer or 10-10-10. Avoid touching the burro’s leaves as they fall off with even the slightest touch. It would be probably safe to keep it out of reach.
Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera x Buckley)
This plant is a deep green plant with pink flowers. To grow this plant well, you would need for at least 2 inches of soil to dry out first after every watering, and endeavor to keep it drier during the winter seasons.
When the plants are budding, always make sure it has sufficient water, because when the water dries out, or when the bud is dehydrated, it drops off, leaving the plant less beautiful. For efficient growth, the plant will need at least a medium to high amount of light and use fertilizers with 10-30-10 concentration level, if you want the plant to bloom.
Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii)
The plant is a native of Madagascar, and the crown of thorn blooms at least once a year; but before the blooming time, here’s what you would need to do. It would need enough sunlight, a high concentration of light for effective photosynthesis.
Allow a least an inch of the soil to dry after every watering so that the plant can bloom properly.
The plant has long leaves that are spoon-shaped, with spiky branches, that is glamorized with clusters of flowers. Although you might not be able to see the flower if you take a close look, you will notice a red, yellow and salmon bract around them.
When you notice that the plant is not blooming, always ensure that the top half of the soil is dry before you water the pot; but also ensure that the pot is not completely dried out so that you don’t have an overwatered pot or a dehydrating pot.
Hens-and-Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum or Echeveria elegan)
They are two succulent plants that share a common name with this succulent plant. They may have some close relationship to one another, but their look is different. Both the sempervivum and the Echeveria bare chick flowers; but what you can tell them apart with is the fact that while the Echeveria flowers are like flat flower rosettes and have rounded edges; the sempervivum also form rosettes, but each leaves are flatter and pointed.
Both plants are different, so that while the Echeveria bloom one a year and grow with arching bell-shaped blooms, Sempervivum grow pink star-shaped flowers on their plants, that die afterward
Always allow the soil to dry slightly before every re-watering so that your plants don’t get to either bloom prematurely or become oversaturated with water.
Jade plant (Crassula ovata)
Most homeowners who decorate their homes with flowers may have heard of the jade plant. It is one of the “Victorian” home décor plants on the planet; and also is relatively simple to grow, and a native of South African. It produces thick stems and glossy green leaves with a touch of red on its body.
When you’re cultivating the plant, allow it to dry up completely, before you water it again. The mistake most gardeners do is to enable the jade to lose their shine before they water it; but that is not so good for it, as it is an indication to the fact that the plant is suffering and is stressed and in need of tenured watering.
Although you are advised to water regularly, do not do it so frequently, because overwatering will kill the jade plant.
Medicine Plant (Aloe vera)
This succulent plant is perhaps the most known plant in the world as one of the most medicinal succulent plants in the world today. It is used of cosmetics and wound and sunburn dressing.
It has sharp teeth that form a protect wedge along the margin of the leaves, and these teeth are sharp enough to cut passerby who probably may not have seen it. When used as home decors, therefore, always place it where persons can’t reach.
When you water this plant, allow the water to dry before another watering, because even after a leaf is cut off, it can still hold water (for at least three days). Always ensure that the plants have the highest amount of sunlight possible if you want a blooming result. Fertilizers ratio should be 10-10-10 for a balanced effect. Do not fertilize the plant during winter.
Panda plants (Kalanchoe tomentosa)
There is at least a dozen of the Kalanchoe tomentosa, but the most common of them is the panda plant. It is cultivated mainly in Madagascar and is grown as a foliage plant.
It has thick green leaves with soft silver hair covering, which gives it this fuzzy effect on the eye, with a semi-blue appearance; while the edge of the leaves has rust color or fuzzy brown hair, which further beautifies the plant.
For a scintillating effect, you would need to let the water dry at least 2-inches after every watering. In the winter season, only water to keep the soil from completing drying out.
A balanced fertilizing ratio of 10-10-10 would be perfect for the plant to grow and bloom radiantly.
Pincushion Cactus (Mammillaria)
This cactus is one of 200 species of the ball-shaped cacti plants, which are commonly grown in homes. Most of this cacti are natives of Mexico, where they thrive under the full weight of the sun. The pincushion cactus is a small species of cactus that can be grown at home.
The plant grows in ball clusters or clumps, but because of the spikes they form, in it is safe to keep it from reach. Another reason why they would need to be kept safe is that of their delicate spine; they are easily broken, so try not be fooled by the hooked ends that are difficult to pull out of the skin.
Always allow the soil to almost dry out before you water the plant again, and also during the summer season, fertilizing the plant three times would be necessary, with a balanced ratio of 10-10-10.
Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea Recurvata)
These trees are nowhere near to being palm trees, although they have feathery mops or palm tree-shaped lush green leaves which makes them look like a palm tree. The tree may not seem like succulents, but it is a succulent plant, and its water base is at the bottom of the plant, in a swollen bulbous base; this is where it gets name elephant feet.
This tree is a perfect home décor tree especially for those neglecting gardeners who would always forget to water the plant. With curly leaves that have small surfaces, it loses extra moisture. You can find this tree in Mexico and the southwestern part of the United States.
The tree will need a lot of sunlight, but it has the adaptable skill to adapt to medium sunlight.
This tree can reach about 12-20 feet tall, and so you would need a pot that can carry its weight, without cracking, let alone break. Fertilization should be ratio balanced to the ratio of 10-10-10.
Snake plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata)
This plant is one of the toughest plants, men can it take a beating or what? A dead-looking, down beaten snake plant can come back alive again when it receives just a little watering; how cool is that? The long and pointed leaves can grow about 2 feet long and has a pattern that looks like a flat snake.
Leave the plant in the pot on its own, and it will raise many other rhizomes till they multiply and you have yourself a thick clump of snake plant.
When you want to water this bed, allow the water to dry slightly, before you go on ahead and water this bed again. When you overwater the plant, its crown rots, so it will be wise to water this plant less regularly.
The plant will need to have medium sunlight for ultimate effect, and a fertilizer ratio of 10-10-10 should be applied to the plant once a year.
You can neglect the snake plants, and it would tolerate the neglect, but what makes it beautiful is how much is when you pay attention to it; pruning and watering make it look a lot better.
How to Care for Succulents Indoors
Before you get or think of getting a succulent plant, they are some pertinent things you would need to bear in mind. This thing, if you do them correctly, you will cultivate and care for the best succulents on the planet.
The first thing you would need to sort out is the appropriate succulent for indoor gardening. Most succulent thrive in direct sunlight, so it would probably be a good idea to get succulents that do not need so much sunlight. Luckily most of the succulents have adaptive abilities to thrive in warm places so that you can cultivate them at home.
Having a well-draining potting medium is another thing you should consider when you’re caring for your succulents. Naturally, succulents don’t like so much water; it might kill them; thus when you do give them more water than they can handle, the draining system comes in handy to take out the excesses.
Sometimes you might want to report the succulent, always pick the right container. Repotting containers should be more significant than the nursery pot, but it should also have drains that are at light 1 or 2 inches bigger than the nursery pot.
Always allow the potting mix to dry between each watering so you can prevent overwatering, which will end up killing your plants if you don’t take care.
It is good to fertilize the succulent once a year with 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 soluble fertilizers so that your plants can have sufficient not surplus fertilizer; the former is good, the latter will only end up killing your plant.
Sometimes if you want to hide out the soft soil, you could add sandy soil on the surface of the plant, which is loose and rocky enough for you succulent (there prefer this kind of earth).
How to Water Succulent Plants?
Watering a succulent plant is all about knowing what kind of succulent plant you want. For some, you would need to water it after it is almost dry, while for others, you’ll need to wet the bed when it dries at least one or two inches. Although the medicine plant and the snake plant above can stay long without water so that they stay healthy, you would need to water the plants once in a while; so you don’t have dull looking plants in your home.
Making Your Home a Living Succulent Art
The idea behind succulent plants is that they are beautiful and almost self-dependent; in that, neglectful owners may not water the plants for days and have no problem. But we would be dwelling on the fact that the succulent plants are beautiful and they are good for plant art.
So how do you make your home a living succulent art? How do you create your very mosaic wall art? It is simple; all you’ll need are; a small pruning snip, staple gun, hammer, paintbrush clean cloths, and some chopsticks (or pencil). You will also need a shadow box made with either cedar or redwood; with a diameter of 1x3s, for the back of the frame. You will need some succulent cutting as well and a large frame that you would put the succulents in. nails, staples, ½ an inch hardware cloth that is cut into the frames’ dimension, paint, all-purpose potting soil and finally a ¼ plywood backing for the back of the shadow box
Here’s how you do it;
First of you start by cutting of the succulents in your garden that you want to use; with the pruning snips, cut it to the desired shape. After cutting the stems of the succulents, let it dry for two or three days on a tray before you plant the back. When that is done, the next thing to do is to make your frame bed. You will nail each end of the cedar or redwood to make a square or rectangle (depending on the frame), that will match the diameter of the structure; this will be your shadow box
Next, you will nail the cedar wood (the plywood), the made shadow box, to the frame for depth of the frame. When you do that, you can now set the hardware cloth just underneath the shadow box. When that is done, you can now add backing to the hardware cloth that would properly hold the soil together. After that, you can now put your plywood board under the frame
You can paint shadow if you like to your preferred color, to add to its aesthetics. Using the color shade of the succulent (which is mostly green) makes it more refined and colorful.
When you finish the painting, add soil. Ensure that the paint is completely dry before you add the soils; you don’t want the chemicals in the paint to affect the plants in any way.
The next step would be that, you can now poke a hole in between the hardware cloth; just underneath the shadow box and plant the dry varieties of succulents that you may have cured
